Among co-workers, he's known as the king of instant messaging. Of the hundreds of employees Kordestani oversees globally, he personally reviews each hire, making sure they pass his "airport test," which means: "If I'm stuck in an airport with one of these employees, I want to enjoy my time and have an intelligent conversation if I can't fly for a couple of hours."

Revenues from paid searches could fetch Google $1 billion by year's end, analysts estimate. It's a very big number for a software company that doesn't physically sell anything.
