From the very beginning dogs set out to please their masters, not the other
way around ... They were put to work to perform a wide variety of chores.
And so today's canine community is broken up into such groups as hunting
dogs, shepherd dogs, military dogs, racing dogs, watchdogs ... Not so with
cats. All go under the banner of "pet," a word the dictionary defines as
"any loved and cherished creature," an excellent choice of words from the
cat's point of view ... Dogs travel hundreds of miles during their lifetime
responding to such commands as "come" and "fetch." Cats approach people
only when there is a reason, and not always even then.
