 Who Owns the Alphabet?

Here is a very interesting study on the alphabet and their owners, according to Google. Why in the world does Netscape appear first in the search results for the word 'X'?! (Ok, GNU comes up first for N because "GNU's Not Unix")

Speaking about the GNU, you probably already know about these funky abbreviations for Unix terms, such as:

and many more!

 More about Search Engines

Mercury News (Dan Gilmor): Someone's lying about Google talks. John Robb, former president of Gomez: "I distrust Silicon Valley VCs more than Microsoft (by a substantial margin) and have no desire to see the same personalities fleece the investing public one more time".

Oh, by the way, check out funny Google blog by Larry and Sergey! I liked the "Free Food" post! :)

Here is an interesting decoder for search engines that shows most of the well-known players and their relation to each other.

Last but not least, type Miserable Failure in Google search and see what comes up first! :)

Reza Vatandoust: Persia uber ales

The Eyeraninan has published some interesting answers to Vatandoust's article.

Speaking of Persia, Persians and the history of the world, I have recently started playing Civilization again. The game that gave me a slap on the wrist when I was in highschool. I used to play Civ 1 during the exam season right after every exam (heck, who needed to study History when there was Civilization).

Civ3 follows the same concept as Civ1 but with a little touch-up on the graphics and of course the enhanced design. It's one of the most interesting games I have ever played, but watch out, it can be quite addictive as well. Oh yea, I'm gonna spend the whole thanksgiving weekend playing Civ3 and I'm gonna choose "Persia" and rule the world this time! :-)

 Nov 14 - Statistics

A new record was set yesterday for some of my cyber stats.

Daily hits for something went over 100.

Daily hits for something else went over 10k.

And, anvari.org comes up as the first result on Google and Yahoo! search for the first time in history. (of course it used to be #1 on altavista)

Stupid MSN and Teoma! Now I know why they will never become popular. :E

 Microsoft NewsBot

Apparently, Microsoft is developing its own news search service in competition with Google News. Many companies have been very active in this field since Google first launched its automatic news reader and categorizer.

Check out the Beta version at http://207.68.185.57/. The links are provided by Microsoft's partner and one of the legends in this field, Moreover.com.

According to Microsoft, their new technology allows MSN Passport holders to browse the news and personalize the feeds. It also intelligently figures out what kind of news the users likes to see and picks the headlines according to their preferences.

 Hearing Test

Something to start your weekend with! (Thanks, Amir Bigguy)

An elderly gentleman of 85 feared his wife was getting hard of hearing.

So one day he called her doctor to make an appointment to have her hearing checked. The Doctor made an appointment for a hearing test in two weeks, and meanwhile there's a simple informal test the husband could do to give the doctor some idea of the state of her problem.

'Here's what you do," said the doctor, "start out about 40 feet away from her, and in a normal conversational speaking tone see if she hears you. If not, go to 30 feet, then 20 feet, and so on until you get a response."

That evening, the wife is in the kitchen cooking dinner, and he's in the living room. He says to himself, "I'm about 40 feet away, let's see what happens."

Then in a normal tone he asks, 'Honey, what's for supper?" No response.

So the husband moved to the other end of the room, about 30 feet from his wife and repeats, "Honey, what's for supper?" Still no response.

Next he moves into the dining room where he is about 20 feet from his wife and asks, "Honey, what's for supper?" Again he gets no response.

So he walks up to> the kitchen door, only 10 feet away. "Honey, what's for supper?" Again there is no response.

So he walks right up behind her. "Honey, what's for supper?"

(I just love this!)
