Back from the short but fun trip to cold and snowy Tahoe. Well, not quite back
since all of a sudden I decided to keep on driving all the way down to
Terra Bella to spend the christmas with family instead of stopping
in the bay area.
It's been very a fun and relaxing holidays so far: had a great time
with friends in Tahoe, went snowboarding and as always had a great time
with my cousins. Watched
"Two weeks notice"
with Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant today and recommend it if you
wanna laugh. :-)
Merry x-mas everybody and happy holidays! (And yes, we "will"
have weekly links next weekend!)
Here are some of the links I gathered during the week. I'm gonna go
to Tahoe tomorrow morning and stay there for a few days, so let me quickly
put these links up and go to bed. Happy Holidays!

Persian Heritage:
"Waiting to board my flight from Shiraz to Tehran, with time on my hands, I approached the Tourist Information Desk and, speaking entirely in English, asked the young woman behind the desk if she sold post-cards. She was sorry, she said, but they had none to sell. She added quickly that there was a book she could share with me showing post-cards from all regions of Iran. Given that the wishes of a visitor are often taken very seriously by Iranians, it did not surprise me that her tone of voice and the open, cheerful quality in her eyes conveyed more than a superficial wish to help. She was fully veiled but her eyes were not, and they looked at me with depths of unspoiled innocence that we in the West see only in younger children. Encountering such a look in a twenty-year-old woman back home, a man might possibly interpret it as flirtatious. This being Iran, she only wished to help me."

This is a pretty funny story:
President George Bush is visiting an elementary school and he visits one of
the classes (4th grade).
They are in the middle of a discussion related to words and their meanings.
The teacher asks the President if he would like to lead the class
in the discussion of the word, "tragedy." So the illustrious leader asks
the class for an example of a "tragedy."

Went to first Google U event last night
at W Hotel
in San Francisco.
Google U is a highly focused introduction to the power of online search-based advertising.
It was a pretty good event overall (especially the food, t-shirt, and $100 credit!).
Two key things I learned there:
1. Relevance is *very important*! It's exactly what google is all about. Choose relevant
keywords and link it to relevant content (web pages).
2. Your ad's position is determined by two factors: maximum cost-per-click and your ad's actual clickthrough rate.
I also talked about the importance of search keywords (not the adwords keywords) and how it can
help the business owners refine and optimize their keywords selection. There is no method to post
the searched keywords to the target URL through a variable (say, $$Q$$) at the moment. I'm gonna submit
this potential development opportunity tonight.
Speaking of Google, have you checked out the new
WebQuotes project? It was launched yesterday.
(Thanks, Evan)
Happy birthday to me!
Thanks everybody for the cards, e-mails and birthday calls.
